Ashwin says CSK “missed a trick” at IPL auction

Ravichandran Ashwin has taken aim at Chennai Super Kings’ IPL auction tactics, arguing this week that the five-time champions passed up a golden window to upgrade their squad. Speaking during a discussion on team-building, the off-spinner said CSK looked hesitant at key points of the bidding, even when reliable domestic names were still on the board.
“They missed a trick,” Ashwin said, suggesting a sharper plan could have helped them address gaps without overspending. His view has split opinion because CSK are known for calm auctions and a strong belief in continuity.
A former franchise staff member defended the approach, insisting CSK “don’t chase noise” and prefer stability over last-minute shopping. Another IPL analyst warned that with rivals spending aggressively, “playing safe can cost you momentum.”
CSK’s model has delivered trophies before, but Ashwin’s critique underlines the pressure on their picks: if results dip, the auction room — not the field — will take the first blame.
