Varanasi to host media cricket tournament from Dec 24

Varanasi will stage a multi-day media cricket tournament starting December 24, bringing together journalist teams from across eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions. The event will be held at local grounds in the city as part of efforts to promote sporting interaction and camaraderie within the media fraternity.
Organisers said several teams have confirmed participation, with matches scheduled across three days in a knockout format. The tournament is expected to feature over a dozen games, with each side playing at least two matches before the semifinals and final.
“This tournament is about bonding beyond the newsroom and celebrating our shared love for cricket,” said organising committee member Anil Singh. A participating journalist added that competitive matches were expected, noting, “Every team is preparing seriously, and the standard improves every year.” Local sports officials have welcomed the initiative, with one official saying, “Events like this keep grassroots cricket alive and encourage healthy competition.”
The media cricket meet has become an annual fixture in the city and continues to draw strong participation, underlining Varanasi’s growing role as a hub for sporting events beyond professional cricket.
